UMASS Scientist points out flaws in Locke and Schwaab letters |
|
With time of the essence, the commonwealth's scientific and economic report, prepared by UMass Dartmouth's School of Marine Science and Technology along with the Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries, intentionally based its analysis on the government's existing science and the data currently used to determine annual catch limits. His response did not sit well with SMAST marine biologist Steve Cadrin, one of the principal authors of the report. "It's a Catch 22 situation because if we had come up with our own data they would have said that these haven't been peer-reviewed," he said. "But when we use data that the agency itself has published, they say that it's not new information. So they are going to get you either way." "There is no way to get around these criteria. Did they know that before they even asked us to provide them with the report?" |
